The structural and technical differences of all-dielectric self-supporting optical cables (ADSS)

In the communication construction of high-voltage transmission lines, ADSS (all-dielectric self-supporting) optical cables have become the core component of the power communication network. Due to the fact that they do not require metal suspension lines and can be directly hung on the towers, they have been widely used in smart grids, wind power and photovoltaic communication fields. However, the structural design, domestic and foreign technical routes, and manufacturing process control points of ADSS optical cables directly determine their long-term reliability in high-voltage environments.
We systematically analyze the technical key points of ADSS optical cables from three core aspects.
1. Structural Design: Layered winding vs. Central Tube. How to choose? The core design of ADSS optical cables is "all-media", "self-supporting", and "resistant to electrical corrosion". The mainstream structures are divided into two types, which are suitable for different scenarios and there is no need to blindly pursue high-end.
Twisted structure (preferred for high-pressure and long-span applications) structure composition (from inside to outside): optical fiber → loose sleeve (filled with water-blocking grease) → FRP non-metallic central reinforcing member → inner sheath → aramid reinforcing layer → PE or AT outer sheath Core design key points: The excess length of the optical fiber is controlled within 0.05%, capable of accommodating a span of 800–1800 meters, with excellent wind vibration resistance performance. The FRP central member provides rigid support. The aramid yarn ratio is designed according to the rated tensile strength, and the actual tensile strength can reach several thousand Newtons.
Double-layer sheath: The inner sheath protects the cable core, and the outer sheath is classified by grade - ordinary PE is used for 35kV and below, and AT anti-arc sheath is used for 110kV and above high-voltage (design life of 30 years, passing IEC 60587 arc test)
Application scenarios: 110kV and above high-voltage transmission lines, power communication trunk lines with a span of over 800 meters, mountainous areas with frequent lightning strikes
2. Central tube structure (the most cost-effective option) Structure composition (from inside to outside): optical fiber → single loose tube (filled with water-blocking grease) → aramid reinforcement layer → PE or AT outer sheath (without FRP core)
Key design points: Compact structure, small outer diameter, light weight, low manufacturing cost. The optical fiber length reserve is approximately 0.1%. The wind vibration resistance is weaker than that of the ribbon type. It is prone to fatigue damage when the span is too large.
Applicable span: 100–300 meters. Applicable scenarios: Distribution networks below 35kV, rural network renovation, short-distance communication.
3. Common principles for structural design: All-media without metal: To prevent lightning strikes, induced currents and electromagnetic interference. Length control: For ribbon-type, 0.5% - 0.7%; for central tube type, 0.1% - 0.3%. To prevent fiber attenuation under tension. Sheath matching voltage: In high-voltage scenarios, AT-resistant sheaths with electrical-arc resistance must be used to prevent electrical tree breakdown.
II. Domestic and International ADSS Optical Cables: 4 Key Differences In terms of standards, materials, and certifications, there are significant differences between domestic and international ADSS optical cables. Export products need to be designed specifically to avoid rework due to non-compliance.
Different Execution Standards: In China: According to GB/T 18899-2023 (DL/T 788-2016) "Full-介质 Self-Supporting Optical Cable", some items require CQC certification. For exports: The EU follows IEC 60794-4-20 and EN 50575 fire protection standards; North America complies with UL/CSA standards; in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, IEC standards + local power regulations are required.
