What Are Overhead Communication Optical Cables?

Overhead communication optical cable refers to a wiring solution where optical cables are suspended in the air for signal transmission via utility poles, communication poles or dedicated towers.

Compared with directly buried optical cables and duct optical cables, overhead optical cables require no road excavation and occupy no underground space, making them ideal for areas with complex terrain or sparse populations.

In terms of structure, overhead optical cables generally adopt a central loose tube or stranded loose tube design. They contain multiple colored optical fibers filled with water-blocking materials, armored with steel or aluminum tape in the middle layer, and wrapped with a high-strength outer sheath. To withstand self-weight as well as environmental loads such as wind and ice, overhead optical cables are usually equipped with galvanized steel strands as messenger wires, to which the cables are fastened using cable ties or suspension clamps.
