**Installation Specification for Indoor Optical Fiber Cables (Bow-type Drop Cables)**

 

Indoor optical fiber cables (commonly known as bow-type drop cables or butterfly cables) are a critical link for achieving user access in FTTH (Fiber to the Home) projects. Bow-type drop cables feature good bending performance, high tensile strength, and a lightweight structure. However, their installation quality directly affects the transmission performance and long-term stability at the user side. The formal name for the bow-type drop cable is "butterfly cable for access networks". It is named for its butterfly-shaped cross-section and is also referred to as a "figure-8 cable". Bow-type drop cables are mostly single-core or dual-core structures, but can also be made in a four-core configuration. The strength members are located at the centers of the two circles, and the optical fiber is positioned at the geometric center of the figure-8 shape. G.657 optical fiber should be used whenever possible for bow-type drop cables intended for FTTH indoor wiring. G.657 fiber has excellent bending resistance, which helps reduce the potential maintenance pressure caused by cable bending.

 

The core requirements of the installation specification for indoor optical fiber cables (bow-type drop cables) can be summarized as follows:

 

- **Fiber selection is the foundation**: G.657 bend-insensitive fiber should be prioritized to mitigate the risk of bending loss caused by numerous turns in indoor wiring.

 

- **Bending radius is the red line**: During installation, the bending radius should be ≥30mm (general requirement); after fixing, it should be ≥15mm. This can be appropriately reduced when G.657 fiber is used.

 

- **Tension must be controlled**: The pulling tension should not exceed 80% of the cable's allowable tensile strength. The main pulling force should be applied to the strength members.

 

- **Concealed ducts take priority**: Use existing concealed ducts whenever possible. Where no concealed ducts are available, use corrugated pipe for protection. The cable shall not be directly embedded in walls.

 

- **Penetrate walls with protection**: A wall bushing must be used when penetrating walls. After completion, the opening shall be sealed with sealing putty.

 

- **Separate routing**: Bow-type drop cables shall not cross electric cables. Cables for low-voltage systems should be routed separately.

 

- **Termination specifications**: Fusion splicing is the preferred method. Sufficient cable length shall be reserved. Excess fiber length shall be coiled with a curvature radius that meets requirements.

 

- **Grounding of metal components**: When using bow-type drop cables with metal strength members, the metal components must be grounded for lightning protection.
