**Standard Fiber Optic Splicing Process**.

 

Fiber optic splicing is not simply "burning two fibers together." It is a set of interlocking precision operations. The main core steps are as follows:

1. Cable Sheathing and Securing

- **Operation:** Use a cable stripper to remove the outer sheath of the optical cable, to a length of approximately 1 meter. Wipe off any waterproof grease. Secure the cable inside the splice closure. The steel wire clamps must be tightened firmly to prevent the cable from "rolling" which could strain and break the fibers inside.
- **Note:** It is strictly forbidden to damage the inner buffer tubes.

 

2. Fiber Preparation (Endface Preparation)

This is the most critical step for determining splice quality and is divided into three sub-steps:

- **Coating Removal:** Use fiber optic strippers to remove the coating. The technique must be **smooth, stable, and fast**. The stripping length depends on the fiber type (for 0.25mm fiber, cut length is 8-16mm; for 0.9mm fiber, cut length is 16mm).
- **Cleaning:** Wipe the bare fiber with a pad moistened with anhydrous alcohol. **Wipe in one direction only**, never back and forth, to prevent secondary contamination.
- **Cleaving:** Cleave the fiber using a precision cleaver. A qualified endface should be mirror-smooth, free of burrs or nicks, and perpendicular to the fiber axis (the angle should be less than 0.3°).

 

3. Splicing and Heat Shrinking

- **Splicing:** Place the fibers into the fusion splicer's V-grooves and close the wind protector. The splicer will automatically align the fibers and discharge the arc. A high-quality splice point should have no bubbles, no narrowing, and no thickening of the glass.
- **Heat Shrinking:** Move the heat shrink sleeve to the center of the splice point and place it in the heater. The heat shrink sleeve is used to restore the fiber's tensile strength.

 

4. Fiber Organizing (Traying) and Sealing

- **Fiber Organizing (Traying):** Organize the spliced and heat-shrunk fibers into the storage tray in sequence. **The larger the bend radius, the better.** Avoid tight bends (tight loops) which can increase loss.
- **Sealing:** An OTDR test must be performed to verify splice quality before sealing the closure. The sealed closure must be kept strictly waterproof (water ingress will cause increased absorption loss in the fiber).
