Structure of Fiber Patch Cords

In multimode optical fibers, the core has a diameter ranging from 50 μm to 65 μm, roughly equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. By contrast, the core of a single-mode optical fiber measures only 8 μm to 10 μm in diameter.

Surrounding the core is a cladding layer of glass with a lower refractive index than the core, which confines light propagation within the core. Outside the cladding lies a thin plastic coating that serves to protect the glass cladding.
