Introduction to FRP in Optical Cables:
FRP is an abbreviation for Fiber Reinforced Plastic, also known as glass fiber reinforced plastic (commonly called "fiberglass"), a non-metallic reinforcing core material widely used in optical cables. It is a continuous cylindrical composite material made from glass fibers and a resin matrix (such as unsaturated polyester resin, epoxy resin, etc.) through a pultrusion process.
Role in Optical Cables:
FRP primarily acts as the central reinforcing core (Strength Member) in optical cables. Its core functions include:
* Providing tensile strength: Withstanding tensile forces during installation and long-term use, preventing cable breakage or deformation.
* Preventing cable bending/collapse: Maintaining the structural rigidity and stability of the cable.
* Reducing fiber stress: Distributing external loads and reducing stress on internal signal transmission fibers.
* Preventing sag during aerial installation: Utilizing its rigidity to support the weight of the aerial optical cable.
Core Advantages of FRP Compared to traditional steel wire reinforcing cores, FRP offers significant advantages:
* Non-metallic properties:** Non-conductive, insensitive to electric shock, suitable for environments with frequent lightning and rain, and also suitable
for use in power systems and areas with strong electromagnetic interference.
* Lightweight:** Approximately 75% lighter than steel and 30% lighter than aluminum, significantly reducing the overall weight of the optical cable.
* Corrosion resistance:** Unaffected by moisture or water immersion, it will not oxidize or rust, resulting in a longer service life.
* High strength:** Tensile strength per unit weight is higher than steel, with good bending strength.
* Protection against biological attack:** The hard, smooth surface effectively prevents rodent gnawing and termite infestation.
* Good chemical stability:** It will not react chemically with the grease inside the optical cable to produce gas, avoiding impact on fiber optic transmission performance.
Two main types of FRP:
FRP commonly used in optical cables. Reinforcing cores are divided into two categories:
* GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer): Uses glass fiber as reinforcement, is relatively inexpensive, and is the most widely used.
* KFRP (Aramid Reinforced Polymer): Uses aramid fiber as reinforcement, has better flexibility, a smaller bending radius, lighter density, and higher specific strength and specific modulus, making it particularly suitable for installation in confined spaces such as corners and baseboards; and it will not puncture the sheath and optical fiber when broken.
