Optical preforms expand production situation
Optical preforms are cylindrical high-purity silica glass rods, high-value upstream products with high technical barriers and profit margins in the optical fiber and cable industry, primarily used for drawing optical fibers. They account for approximately 70% of the total profits across the optical fiber industrial chain. However, long construction cycles for preform production lines prevent rapid capacity expansion in the short term, making them the primary bottleneck on the supply side.
According to forecasts by CRU (Commodity Research Bureau), China's effective optical preform capacity utilization rate will reach 84.3% in 2026, operating near full capacity.
Industry insiders previously confirmed to reporters from the Shanghai Securities News that optical preform capacity is currently tight, with a capacity expansion cycle of 12 to 18 months. Driven by the supply-demand imbalance, the shortage of optical fibers is expected to last through the first half of 2027.
