MPO Connector Concept

 

In traditional connections, a single optical fiber requires an independent interface. However, in AI data centers, tens of thousands of GPU cards need to exchange data frantically, and the cabinet space is limited. At this time, MPO (Multi-Port Optical Connector) multi-core optical fiber connectors are needed to compress multiple optical fibers into a compact plastic plug, achieving high-density and low-loss signal transmission. As AI servers are fully upgrading to 800G/1.6T optical interconnection, the number of optical fiber links required by each device has increased exponentially. MPO connectors are becoming one of the fastest-growing passive devices in data centers.
Upstream: The core upstream component of the MT connector and the high-precision MPO connector is the MT core. This is a precise ceramic or plastic piece covered with micron-level fiber positioning holes. Usually, two thinner than a hair strand of conductive pins need to be inserted to ensure perfect physical contact of the fiber end face. In addition, high-precision pins, springs, and fiber ribbon cables are also key raw materials, directly determining the optical performance and insertion-pulling lifespan of the connection.
Midstream: The midstream stage of MPO patch cords and adapter modules involves assembling the upstream connectors, optical fibers, and components into standard MPO/MTP patch cords and high-density distribution cabinets. This seemingly simple assembly process of "connecting the pins" actually requires extremely high standards for end-face grinding and interference detection. Currently, the midstream stage is transforming from merely manufacturing patch cords to jointly developing customized solutions such as liquid cooling compatibility, dust resistance, and bending resistance with major manufacturers.
Downstream: The downstream of the MPO (Multi-Port Optical Transceiver) for data centers and computing power clusters is highly concentrated, mainly consisting of ultra-large-scale data centers and AI computing power clusters. In the short-distance high-speed interconnection between switches and servers, as well as between GPUs and GPUs, MPO is the preferred physical connection solution. With the upgrade of GPU computing nodes by manufacturers such as NVIDIA, the requirements for the density and loss of the accompanying optical connectors have become increasingly higher, driving MPO to evolve towards higher core counts.
