Jumper Cable

Jumper Cable

Patch cord indoor drop cable with connectors SC/UPC to SC/APC patch cable
Drop cables are cables that run from the distribution point or cable to the subscriber/user.
Fiber patch cord, often called fiber patch cable, fiber jumper, or fiber patch lead, is a length of fiber cable that terminated with fiber optic connectors at each end. The connectors allow fiber optic patch cord to be rapidly connected to an optical switch or other telecommunications/computer device.

Introduction to Drop Fiber Optic Patch Cords

Drop fiber optic patch cords are cables with fiber optic connectors pre-installed at both ends of a pre-existing drop cable. They come with various interfaces such as FC and SC, with SC-SC connectors being the most common in the market. Drop fiber optic patch cords are also known as drop patch cords, FTTH pigtails, SC-type double-ended pre-terminated drop fiber optic cable patch cords, and FTTH prefabricated drop fiber optic cable patch cords.

I. Specifications and Customization

Drop fiber optic cables are available in various specifications and can be customized to different lengths, such as 3 meters, 5 meters, 10 meters, 20 meters, 30 meters, 40 meters, 50 meters, 60 meters, 80 meters, 100 meters, 150 meters, 200 meters, 300 meters, 500 meters, and 800 meters.

II. Applications

Drop fiber optic patch cords are widely used in telecommunications networks, data transmission, testing equipment, local area networks (LANs), and cable television networks (CATV).

III. Features

Various connector types: including FC, SC, ST, LC, etc., with PC, UPC, and APC end-face contact methods. Utilizing high-quality zirconia ceramic ferrules, it features low insertion loss and excellent interchangeability.

Reliable and stable connection: Drop cable patch cords (pigeons) can be coupled with fiber optic connectors or fused to achieve quick fiber optic connections. Compared to fiber optic quick connectors, the reliability, stability, lifespan, installation success rate, and technical specifications are significantly improved.

Easy installation and maintenance: Fast installation, simple and convenient use and maintenance, and low cost.

IV. Technical Parameters

The technical parameters of drop fiber optic patch cords include insertion loss and return loss. Specific values vary depending on the type of connector and end-face contact method. For example, PC, SPC, and UPC fiber end faces are all flat, differing only in the grinding quality; their industry standard return losses are -35dB, -40dB, and -50dB, respectively. APC end faces are ground at an 8-degree angle to reduce reflection, with an industry standard return loss of -60dB. V. Fiber Optic Connector End Face Types

Fiber optic connectors are classified into three types: PC, UPC, and APC. PC and UPC have a micro-sphere end face, parallel to the ceramic body's end face; while APC has an 8º angled end face between the micro-sphere and the ceramic body's end face. Simply put, PC patch cords can be understood as network-grade patch cords, while UPC/APC are carrier-grade patch cords. The difference lies in the connector head's workmanship and patch cord loss; UPC/APC patch cords have finer workmanship and lower loss.

VI. Fiber Optic Connector Types

FC Type: External reinforcement uses a metal sleeve, and the fastening method is a screw thread. Generally used on the ODF side (commonly used on patch panels). FC connectors are generally used in telecommunications networks, with a nut screwed onto the adapter. Advantages include reliability and dust protection; disadvantages include slightly longer installation time.

SC Type: Connector for connecting GBIC optical modules. The shell is rectangular, and the fastening method is a push-pull latch type, requiring no rotation (commonly used on routers and switches). SC connectors are commonly used in general networks. They are easy to plug and unplug, but are prone to falling out.

ST type: Commonly used in fiber optic distribution frames. The housing is round, and the fastening method is a screw thread (for 10Base-F connections, the connector is usually ST type). ST connectors are commonly used in general networks. After insertion, the ST connector rotates half a turn to secure it; however, it is prone to breakage.

LC type: Connectors for SFP modules, using a convenient modular RJ latching mechanism (commonly used in routers).

VII. Pre-terminated Drop Cables

Pre-terminated drop cables are fiber optic connectors designed by manufacturers for Fiber to the Home (FTTH). They are factory-prefabricated and provide an excellent solution for drop cable connections. Pre-terminated drop cables can be used with fiber optic cold splices or fusion splices to quickly achieve fiber optic splicing. Compared to fiber optic quick connectors, drop cables, being factory-finished through a grinding process, offer significantly improved reliability, stability, lifespan, installation success rate, and technical specifications. Furthermore, they allow for custom lengths, quick installation, simple maintenance, and lower overall costs.

VIII. Product Structure and Applications

Drop cables are typically single-core or dual-core, but can also be four-core, with a figure-eight shaped cross-section. The reinforcing element is located at the center of the two circles and can be metallic or non-metallic; the optical fiber is located at the geometric center of the figure-eight. The fiber inside the drop cable uses G.657 fiber with a small bending radius, allowing for installation with a 20mm bending radius, making it suitable for indoor installation via conduit or surface wiring.

Applications of drop cables include indoor wiring, vertical and horizontal wiring within buildings, self-supporting overhead wiring, and conduit wiring. In indoor wiring, drop cables can adapt to most indoor wiring conditions, such as bending with a 20mm radius and withstanding lateral pressure from people stepping on them and the tensile force from dragging during construction. Furthermore, with the aid of various field connectors, field termination and splicing can be achieved in the shortest possible time. Therefore, drop fiber optic cable is the best choice for indoor FTTH cabling.

In conclusion, drop fiber optic patch cords, as an efficient and reliable fiber optic connection solution, have broad application prospects in the field of fiber optic communication.
