Complete Introduction to SC/UPC Patch Cords

**Basic Definition** SC/UPC patch cords are fiber optic patch cords using SC square pluggable connectors and UPC ultra-physical contact polishing technology on the end faces. They are the mainstream connection medium in digital optical communication scenarios.

**Core Structure and Appearance**
**Connector:** 2.5mm ceramic ferrule, blue square shell, push-pull snap-lock, no rotation required.

**End Face Technology:** Micro-spherical flat polishing, no tilt angle, high-precision polishing achieves a tight fit between the fiber end faces.

**Key Performance Parameters**
**Insertion Loss:** Typical value <0.3dB, high-quality products can be as low as ≤0.2dB.

**Return Loss:** Industry standard ≥50dB, far exceeding the -35dB standard of basic PC technology.

Damage Avoidance Methods for Mixed Connections with APC Endfaces

**Basic Identification and Differentiation**
**Appearance Marking:** SC/UPC connectors are blue, while APC connectors are uniformly green. Color coding allows for quick differentiation between the two endface types.

**Endface Characteristics:** APC endfaces are ground at an 8° angle, the tilt is visually observable, while UPC endfaces are completely flat micro-spherical surfaces.

**Construction Operation Standards**
**Pre-Installation Classification:** Store UPC and APC patch cords in separate racks and areas to avoid mixing them on the same distribution frame and causing incorrect connections.

**Pre-Matching Verification:** Before each insertion or removal, confirm that the endface types of the connectors at both ends are completely consistent. Directly connecting different types using ordinary flanges is prohibited.

**Emergency Fault Handling:** If a sudden drop in signal occurs after a mismatched connection, immediately remove the connector and use a fiber optic cleaning pen to wipe both endfaces, checking for scratches or chips.

Patch cords with physically damaged end faces are to be discarded and must not be used in the system to avoid causing signal failures throughout the entire link.

Compliant Connection Solution: When it is absolutely necessary to achieve interoperability between UPC and APC links, a dedicated PC-APC conversion patch cord must be used. Direct connection via ordinary flanges is prohibited.
