Long-term strong ultraviolet radiation is one main natural aging factor for overhead outdoor optical cables. Ultraviolet photon will break polymer molecular chain of outer sheath material gradually, leading to sheath whitening, cracking, hardening and water permeability. Ordinary PVC sheath cannot resist ultraviolet ray, forbidden for aerial outdoor laying. PE and modified PE sheath add anti-ultraviolet carbon black additive to improve radiation resistance. High-altitude plateau areas have stronger ultraviolet intensity, needing special anti-UV aerial optical cable. Cracked sheath caused by ultraviolet aging will lead to armor rust, fiber dampening and increasing optical attenuation. Regular exterior inspection of aerial cable sheath is required for plateau outdoor communication line daily maintenance.
Optical fiber chromatic dispersion means different wavelength light has different transmission speed inside fiber, causing signal time delay difference at receiving end. It is divided into material dispersion, waveguide dispersion and modal dispersion three types. Material dispersion is caused by silica glass raw material characteristics; waveguide dispersion is determined by fiber core and cladding structural design; modal dispersion only exists in multi-mode fiber. Excessive chromatic dispersion will widen digital pulse signal, lead to code error and network packet loss. Communication engineers adjust working wavelength to zero-dispersion window to restrain dispersion. 1310nm is the zero-dispersion wavelength of standard G.652 fiber, which is the core reason for large-scale application of 1310nm wavelength trunk transmission.
Optical fiber transmission is divided into unidirectional transmission and bidirectional transmission according to signal transmission direction. Unidirectional transmission means one fiber core only transmits optical signal in single fixed direction, needing two fiber cores to complete sending and receiving interaction, which is the most common mode for traditional trunk lines. Bidirectional transmission adopts different wavelength transceiver technology, realizing uplink and downlink signal transmission on one single fiber core simultaneously. Household FTTH broadband adopts bidirectional transmission: 1490nm wavelength for downlink receiving data, 1310nm wavelength for uplink sending data. Bidirectional mode saves half fiber core resources, suitable for access network. Unidirectional mode owns stronger anti-crosstalk performance, prioritized for long-distance high-speed backbone optical transmission.
