### 3. What is an SC/UPC-SC/APC patch cord?

**A single-mode hybrid fiber optic patch cord with a blue SC UPC connector on one end and a green SC APC connector on the other.** It's specifically designed for cross-system connections where one end is a UPC and the other is an APC, eliminating the need for additional adapters and reducing secondary losses and potential points of failure.

 

## II. Structure and Specifications

1. **Fiber Optic Type**: Only **single-mode 9/125μm OS2 (G.652D/G.657A1/A2)**, multimode without APC process, no multimode SC/UPC-SC/APC patch cords.

## IV. Core Use Cases (Why Use This Hybrid Patch Cord?)

The only essential use case for this patch cord is **mismatch between new and old equipment interfaces** in data centers/broadband networks:

1. **FTTH PON Broadband Data Centers**

OLT equipment ports are mostly **SC/APC (green)**, while the optical ports of the data center's internal network patch panels and switches are **SC/UPC (blue)**. Using this patch cord to directly connect the splitter and the switch replaces the "patch cord + flange adapter," reducing losses.

2. **Cable TV CATV Fiber-Coaxial Convergence Network** The front-end RF optical transmitter is an APC (Anti-Reflection Interference Analog Television Signal), and the data switch is a UPC, enabling cable-based transmission and interconnection for both cable TV and broadband.

3. **Carrier Network Upgrades** Existing UPC patch panels in old equipment rooms can be upgraded with new XGS-PON/50G-PON APC equipment without replacing the entire wiring system, offering low-cost compatibility upgrades.

4. **Hybrid Transmission Laboratory and Optical Testing Instruments** Instrument ports include UPC digital ports and APC RF test ports for cross-endpoint optical path testing.

 

## V. Important Usage Prohibitions and Precautions

1. **Do Not Force Direct Connection Between UPC and APC Flanges** Forcing a connection between the UPC and APC flanges with an 8° bevel and a 0° flat surface will create a huge air gap: insertion loss will increase by 10~15dB, resulting in severe packet loss, static on television, and long-term damage to the ceramic ferrule and connector.

→ **A pre-made SC/UPC-SC/APC hybrid patch cord must be used for transition; ordinary flange adapters are not acceptable.**

2. **Distinguish the polarity of both ends; do not reverse or mix them.**

The APC end must be connected to PON OLT or CATV RF equipment; the UPC end must be connected to a switch or data patch panel.

If the APC is connected to an ordinary switch, the excessive return loss has no negative impact, but the cost is higher; connecting the UPC to a PON optical modem will cause network disconnection and registration failure due to reflection.

3. **The end face must be clean.**
The beveled surface of the APC is more prone to dust accumulation. Clean it with fiber optic cleaning paper and anhydrous alcohol before plugging and unplugging to avoid reflection degradation.

4. **Quick color differentiation.**
Blue connector = UPC (digital equipment side), green connector = APC (PON/broadcast equipment side) to avoid confusion during installation.

 

## VI. Comparison with Same-Endface Patch Cords

1. SC/UPC-SC/UPC: Pure digital intranet, data center, no PON/CATV scenarios;
