Recently, the 107th meeting of the Cable Working Group (TC6 WG3) of the Transmission and Access Network Technology Working Committee, hosted by the China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) and organized by Shanghai Feikai Materials Technology Co., Ltd., was successfully held in Anqing, a famous historical and cultural city. During the meeting, a brainstorming session themed "Tenth Anniversary Commemoration of the G.654.E Fiber Optic Standard" was held. Five industry experts were invited to give technical reports on different aspects of G.654.E fiber optics at this commemorative meeting, sparking heated discussions. The meeting was chaired by Xue Mengchi, deputy head of WG3. Dr. Shen Shikui, chief researcher in the field of optical transmission at China Unicom Research Institute, gave a report entitled "Looking at the Introduction of New Fiber Optics from the History of G.654.E Fiber Optics." He reviewed China Unicom's progress in promoting the application of G.654.E fiber optics to land trunk transmission in the 2010s, as well as landmark projects such as Xinjiang and Jinan-Qingdao. He introduced many engineering problems and the process of overcoming them in the application of G.654.E fiber optic trunk lines, and from this, he derived many experiences and reflections on the introduction of new fiber optics.
Dr. Cao Shanshan, Deputy Chief Engineer of ZTT Group, delivered a report entitled "Broadband Cutoff Wavelength-Shifted Single-Mode Fiber for S+C+L Band WDM Systems," sharing the characteristics of their self-developed G.654 fiber series and focusing on the key standard points of broadband cutoff wavelength-shifted single-mode fiber for S+C+L band WDM systems, contributing to the joint development of industry standards and technological upgrades. Dr. Zhao Zheyu, Senior Product Manager of Fiberhome Communications, presented a report entitled "G.654.E Multi-Core Fiber: Optical Communication Solutions for the T-Bit Era," focusing on key technologies of G.654.E fiber and multi-core fiber, highlighting advancements in core technologies such as ultra-low loss, low crosstalk, and spatial division multiplexing, and exploring the future development direction of ultra-high capacity, ultra-long distance optical transmission networks. Wu Jun, Senior Product Manager of Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (YOFC), presented a report titled "Optical Network Revolution in the Intelligent Computing Era: A Decade of Leap Forward in G.654.E and YOFC's Industrial Practice."
The report focused on the technological advancements of G.654.E optical fiber in high-speed, long-distance, and high-capacity transmission at 800G and above, its expanded applications in the S+C+L bands, and its application research combining with sensing and monitoring, and quantum communication. He concluded that ultra-low attenuation G.654.E optical fiber will provide the best optical fiber and cable solutions for expanding international and domestic backbone networks in the AI era, constructing the "East-to-West Computing" transportation artery, and ultra-long-distance power communication transmission. Sun Nan, Head of the Optical Fiber Preform R&D Module at Hengtong, presented a report titled "Development and Application of Dual-Use G.654 Optical Fiber for Land and Sea." The report highlighted Hengtong's technological evolution in G.654 optical fiber, showcasing the structure and performance of Hengtong's ultra-low attenuation, large effective area, C+L band G654E optical fiber, and sharing typical application cases in 400G, East-to-West Computing, and submarine optical cable projects. Subsequently, Wang Guangquan, Vice Chairman of TC6, summarized the experience of promoting the trunk application of G.654.E optical fiber in the early stage and vividly described the domestic and foreign industry situation at that time; Yang Zhuang, Chairman of TC6, summarized the brainstorming meeting and expressed his earnest expectations for the scientific and standardization workers in optical fiber and cable.
