Since 2026, the global fiber market has experienced a synchronized increase in both volume and price, resulting in a significant improvement in its prosperity level. 1) Volume: The industry demand has grown rapidly driven by AI data centers and unmanned aerial vehicles. We predict that the global fiber demand will reach 760 million and 889 million fiber kilometers in 2026 and 2027 respectively, with year-on-year growth rates of 27.59% and 16.97%. At the same time, the operating rate of the supply side is running at a high level, and the rigid constraints support the upward movement of the price center. 2) Price: The growth rate of the spot price is steep. According to CRU statistics, in March 2026, the tax-inclusive price of G.652.D fiber in China was 94.2 yuan per fiber kilometer, an increase of 165% compared to January, surpassing the peak of the previous cycle. The spot prices in the United States, Europe, and India increased by 48%, 128%, and 214% respectively compared to January.
Demand side: The current fiber price increase is the result of a synchronized increase in multiple demand areas, unlike the previous cycle where the demand was driven by a single operator. This round of fiber and cable price resonance's prosperity cycle occurred from 2015 to 2018, driven by factors such as the "Broadband China" strategy, the large-scale rollout of FTTH, and the deep coverage of 4G networks, leading to the concentrated release of operator capital expenditures. The main changes in the downstream demand of this industry cycle are as follows: 1) AI data centers: The changes in the AI network architecture have driven an increase in fiber consumption. According to CRU, the demand for fiber cables in global data centers has grown rapidly in the past three years, with the proportion of fiber kilometers increasing from 3.65% in 2023 to 12.67% in 2025. We estimate that the demand for fiber cables in global data centers will reach 132 million and 2.44 million fiber kilometers in 2026 and 2027 respectively, with year-on-year growth rates of 76% and 86%. 2) Unmanned aerial vehicle demand: The consumption of FPV drones and strategic reserve demand are strong. We estimate that the demand for fiber for unmanned aerial vehicles in 2025 and 2026 will be 146 million and 152 million fiber kilometers respectively, with year-on-year growth rates of 154.95% and 4.1%. 3) Operators: The demand on the telecom side has grown steadily, and the historical centralized procurement of domestic operators has entered the execution tail. The next round of group optical cable centralized procurement is imminent, and the price increase trend is clear. The network construction of overseas operators continues to advance, and we estimate that the global operator demand will reach 4.44 million and 4.55 million fiber kilometers in 2026 and 2027 respectively, with year-on-year growth rates of 4.58% and 2.46%.
Tajikistan has laid optical cables leading to China
At present, over 38 kilometers of optical cables have been laid, and 2,500 poles specially designed for the cold climate conditions in Murghab have been installed. The main project from the Kurmala border crossing to the Sabashe section has been completed, and the Jelondi residential area has stockpiled necessary equipment, technical supplies and materials. The project is implemented by the national communication operator "Tajik Telecom" Joint Stock Company. It will enhance the country's digital sovereignty, improve communication service quality, and expand Tajikistan's international communication transit potential. It is reported that this project is of great significance to the social and economic development of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. Residents in mountainous and remote villages along the route will have access to high-speed internet, e-government, distance education, remote medical care and digital financial services. The project for 5G and cross-border optical cable construction progress was announced to start in 2025. The first and second stage connection projects have all been completed. Currently, the high-speed backbone network to the Horog City has been put into operation. After its operation, this line will become Tajikistan's fifth international communication node. The new access point to China will provide backup routes for the national internet, enhance communication stability and reliability, and simultaneously improve data transmission speed and the efficiency of international channel usage.
