An optical fiber is a dielectric waveguide that transmits light waves. It consists of a filament composed of two concentric layers of transparent dielectric material. The most widely used dielectric material is quartz glass (SiO2). The inner dielectric layer is known as the "core," and its refractive index is higher than that of the outer dielectric layer (known as the "cladding"). The refractive indices of the core or cladding are adjusted by doping the quartz glass with impurities such as germanium, phosphorus, fluorine, or boron. Optical fibers used for telecommunications primarily transmit near-infrared light within the wavelength range of 0.8 to 1.7 micrometers. The core diameter varies depending on the fiber type, typically ranging from a few micrometers up to 100 micrometers, while the outer diameter is generally around 125 micrometers. The fiber is encased in an outer plastic coating. An optical cable is constructed by bundling one or more optical fibers together, along with reinforcing and protective elements. Optical cables can be deployed and utilized in a wide variety of environments. The manufacturing process for optical cables is similar to that of electrical cables.

Optical Fibers and Cables

Optical fiber communication constitutes one of the most critical methods of modern information transmission. It offers numerous advantages, including high transmission capacity, long relay distances, enhanced security, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and the conservation of copper resources.
